In the nearly sixteen years since her ordination on October 26, 2008, Deby Veach has served our community without ego and with a heart of generous, thoughtful grace. It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve this community alongside her.
I’ve come to see deacons as the conscience of the church, reminding us of our responsibility to the wider community, to matters of justice and love, to seeing the suffering we’d rather ignore, to loving the people we’d rather despise, to giving the wealth we’d rather keep, to being the people we wish we could be and just need the permission to be. To love like Jesus and give like Jesus and serve like Jesus with such devotion and courage and care that others might like to come along and give it a shot, too.
This week, we get to celebrate that very service that has revealed the grace of God with us, through us, among us, and to show our gratitude to God and to Deby for being so lucky for so long.
