For Us, Everything Starts With Love
Proper 23A | Matthew 22:1-14
Comparisons. How do we compare things? Sometimes we do it for the sake of judgment. Is this as good as it was before? This is what the stereotypical senior is doing when they say “Kids these days!” and “Back in my day…” Everything gets to be a comparison. When I was in high school, I could get a Big Mac extra value meal for $2.99! And we say this with a shake of the head and disappointment in our hearts because things are so very different.
Another way we compare things is to make a decision. We compare prices, reputations, experience, and performance when we buy a car or a computer or a new refrigerator. There’s no nostalgia to color our choice here, not in the same way, is there? We’re trying to compare the things to make a better decision.
There are other ways we compare, as in analysis, critical theory, and art, but at the root of comparison is putting two or more things up against each other to see how they look next to each other. How are they different and how are they the same? What impact do the associated choices make to the outcomes? How about aesthetics? And, here’s my favorite one: does the comparing of these two things reveal new things about them? How do they inform and interact with each other? How are they in conversation with each other?
