Giving is the Real Currency
Proper 24A | Matthew 22:15-20
To review: We’re in Jerusalem. Jesus has made a scene. Temple leaders asked Jesus where he gets his authority to do this. Jesus tells three parables about the wickedness of these leaders. And they get mad. Mad enough to try and trap him into making a heretical statement. This, friends, is important. Make note that this is the expressed goal of their trap.
What they really want to do is to undermine Jesus as he has undermined them. But not just because they’re petty. But because they feel threatened by him and fear his teaching. If you undercut him, they think, you can stop his message.
